E. Nesbit’s
BEAUTIFUL STORIES FROM SHAKESPEARE

OUR OWN EXCLUSIVE AUDIOBOOK Edition, AVAILABLE ONLY IN THIS COLLECTION!
A Home Study Course For the Young At Heart
– 20 Stories from Shakespeare’s plays retold for all ages
Narrated by Rose Lee, Anna Sul, and Ramona Voight

The cornerstone of our SHAKESPEARE FOR THE EARS collection is this newly recorded version of E. Nesbit’s classic retelling of Shakespeare’s plays,
BEAUTIFUL STORIES FROM SHAKESPEARE. Here is a little background information for you on this book and our audio production of it:
.
Edith Bland Nesbit (1858 – 1924) was an English author and poet whose children’s works were published under the name of E. Nesbit. She wrote or collaborated on over 60 books of fiction for children, several of which have been adapted for film and television. You might recognize some of them: The Railway Children, Five Children and It, and The Story of the Treasure Seekers.
.
BEAUTIFUL STORIES FROM SHAKESPEARE is Nesbit’s much beloved, time-tested classic “Living Book” adaptation of TWENTY of Shakespeare’s plays, retold especially for younger listeners in her day (which means that they are appropriate for both young AND adult readers today). Her book, heavily illustrated and including a wonderful selection of famous quotes from Shakespeare & a pronunciation guide (all of which is included in our collection) was originally subtitled “A Home Study Course”. It is indeed that, as anyone who goes through this volume will have an excellent grasp on Shakespeare’s stories & a taste of his writing — so we kept that subtitle for our own CD collection. Our brand new audiobook version of this classic book makes it all the more accessible and “painless” for those who want to introduce the Bard’s work to their children.

Included in this newly recorded  4+ hour audiobook course:

Sherlock Holmes on Old Time Radio!

Next… Flex your kids’ deductive skills and follow along as the most famous literary detective of all time solves some of his most baffling and thrilling cases. Can YOU figure them out before Holmes does? We’ve included TWO DOZEN episodes of the classic “New Adventures of Sherlock Holmes” series from the early 1940’s, starring Basil Rathbone as Holmes. (NOTE: Because some of these shows have crimes or murders off screen, they might not be suitable for the very youngest listeners — but trust us, this is still family entertainment and is easily “G” rated.)

Fifty Famous Stories Retold!
For four generations, James Baldwin’s classic “50 Famous Stories Retold” has introduced young readers to a wonderful collection of time-honored tales … stories that have become an integral part of Western history and culture. These stories not only have deep value as tales of courage, wisdom, kindness and valor, but also contain core ideals and references that your children will encounter in many other readings and media for the rest of their lives. Many homeschool curriculums already recognize the importance of this book and highly recommend it as part of their own “core curriculum”. But we’ve taken a great thing… and made it even better!
.
Our exclusive  Audiobook presentation of these classic tales is especially neat in that our readers are homeschooled kids themselves.  Baldwin’s versions of these tales are already great… but it is a true delight to hear them performed so well by these talented young readers. Your kids will really enjoy these audio readings, and in the process will become acquainted with a selection of time-honored stories which have become so incorporated into literature and history that a knowledge of them is an indispensable part of one’s education.
.
Each of these 50 stories is quite short, running from 3 to 15 minutes each —
perfect short tales for young ears! Our readers for each of these stories are homeschooled kids themselves,
who have done a delightful job bringing these stories to life! (Total length 4+ hours)

Thirty More Famous Stories Retold!
James Baldwin wrote this great follow up book, “Thirty More Famous Stories Retold”, filled with longer stories for kids who had enjoyed “50 Famous Stories” and were asking for more… but those same young readers were also growing up and needed something a bit more challenging to read. Thus the tales in this collection are somewhat longer and have quite a bit more depth to them. It seems that this book has been virtually overlooked by the homeschooling curriculum-makers… but we actually found it an even richer, more satisfying collection of stories than the classic “50”! We have no doubt your family will treasure this companion audio collection as well.
.
Each of these 30 stories are longer than those on the “50 Stories” collection, as they were originally written for somewhat older readers. There are wonderful moral lessons as well as history in these great tales from the past. They run from 5 to 25 minutes each. (Total length 4 1/2 hours) Our reader for these stories is Anna Sul, who also narrated several stories on our delightful Shakespeare collection.

Les Miserables
Victor Hugo’s Les Misérables (translated variously from French as The Miserable Ones, The Wretched, The Poor Ones, The Wretched Poor, The Victims) is an epic novel by French author Victor Hugo, and is among the best-known novels of the 19th century.  This classic tale follows the struggles of ex-convict Jean Valjean, during the period just after the French Revolution, as he seeks redemption from an unjust past by adopting the little servant girl, Cosette.  In 1937, Orson Welles wrote, produced, and directed this great seven-part adaptation for radio station WOR. Welles plays the part of Valjean as well as narrator in this wonderful, gripping “Living Book for the Ears” audio dramatization. A “must hear”!

.
Included in this downloadable collection are all seven half hour episodes of the 1937 dramatization of Les Misérables (in great sound quality) plus Eight PDF Listening & Discussion Guides in PDF format. As a bonus, we are also including an adaptation of “The Story of the Bishop’s Candlesticks” plus an extra PDF Listening Guide for that program as well. TwainLogo
Mark Twain for the Ears
Samuel Langhorne Clemens (November 30, 1835 – April 21, 1910), better known by the pen name Mark Twain, was a humorist, satirist, lecturer and writer from the United States of America. Twain is most noted for his novels Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, which has since been called the Great American Novel, and The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. He is also known for his quotations. During his lifetime, Twain became a friend to presidents, artists, leading industrialists and European royalty. Twain enjoyed immense public popularity, and his keen wit and incisive satire earned him praise from both critics and peers. American author William Faulkner called Twain “the father of American literature.”
.
In this collection we have compiled 11 classic radio dramatizations of Twain’s stories — some very well known, and others hardly known at all. We’ve also included a biographical story about Twain’s life and career as well. All are great fun to listen to, and together offer a wonderful overview of the works of this great American writer.

Charles Dickens on the Radio
Few names in literature are as well-known or as beloved as that of Charles Dickens (1812 – 1870). His rich stories and wonderful characters are still loved and enjoyed today. Dickens authored fifteen major novels and several short stories during his lifetime, with the inspiration for many of these based on his own life and experience in Victorian England. Many of these were faithfully adapted for radio in years gone by, and are included in this collection. These are great stories. Over 12 hours of classic audio!

My Favorite Story
Favorite Story was another classic, well-loved “old time radio” anthology series that each week presented the best-loved piece of literature of a well-known public figure, dramatized by an all-star cast. These marvelous half-hour adaptations were introduced and hosted by Ronald Colman, the famous actor with a delightful, urbane British accent. Coleman also stars in several of these adaptations as well.
.
“What is your favorite story?”
… that was the question the show’s producers posed to a dazzling array of movie stars, acclaimed artists, authors, composers and critics, renowned poets, scholars, humorists, explorers… everyone from Shirley Temple to Albert Einstein. And what stories did they choose? A marvelous array of classic short stories and “living books” — from the heart-warming to the dramatic, from the humorous to the downright spine-tingling. Some (the short stories) are complete adaptations of the original story. Others (the novels) are well done condensations or episodes from the original work — all neatly adapted in a fast-moving half hour of great dramatic radio that is suitable for the entire family.
