The First Spelling Book

THE FIRST SPELLING BOOK (PDF ebook)

Today’s resource is this wonderful spelling lesson book, originally published for primary grade students in the Philipines. As such, it has a fascinating agricultural / Philipino slant with delightful illustrations, so there is some cultural learning going on along with the spelling lessons. Each of the lessons in this book has instructions for the teacher at the bottom of each page to help you in presenting the lesson. Lessons are meant for the second through fourth grades, and there is lots of variety in the presentations. Lots of fun, one of our favorite vintage spellers ever. Enjoy!

Note: This ebook is a scanned copy of the original printed book. We recommend viewing on a computer, not a phone.

Great Authors teach Spelling!

Wheeler’s Graded Studies in Great Authors: A Complete Speller

Here’s a fantastic vintage spelling book, which uses great quotes from famous authors (Shakespeare, Longfellow, Coleridge, Burns, etc.) as both copywork and spelling practice… with particular attention paid to spelling rules and trickier spellings.

This is perfect for upper elementary through jr high spellers. Loads of great quotations too, if you just want to use this for copywork and penmanship. Highly recommended!

Spelling

Spell by Color

The Spell By Color spelling course by Andrea Scurlock (for grades 3 and up) uses color-coding to reinforce organized instruction in the rules of spelling. The course is unique in that it actually teaches spelling rules clearly and explicitly to ensure that a child has the tools they need for figuring out how to spell any word, not just the ones they see on their spelling lists.

Andrea has made the complete first year of this 3 year course available as a freebie. “Year One” is geared toward 3rd grade but can be used with older children who either need extra practice or who have not yet use a rules-based spelling program. There are a total of 31 weeks in Spell By Color Year One, averaging 4 lessons per week. This leaves you a few weeks remaining in the school year to focus on age-appropriate sight words that don’t fit well into any spelling rule.

For more information, and the download link for the full “Year One” course, you can email Andrea at discoverSBC@gmail.com and request a copy. Tell her HomeschoolFreebie.com sent you!
